Pole-vaulter April Steiner-Bennett, a physical education teacher at Hellstern Middle School in Springdale, finished eighth in a field of 12 in her Olympic competition, clearing 14 feet, 11 inches. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of Education and Health Professions in 2003.
Kathleen Barta, associate professor of nursing at the University of Arkansas, taught several groups of Kauffman Scholars who visited campus this summer to learn about college and explore career choices. The rising eighth-graders from Kansas City chose from among several areas of study, but they also took part in fun activities and facility tours. The Kauffman program, which is funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, supports at-risk, urban youth through high school and college. In the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing, Barta taught the students how to assess vital signs such as heart rate, respiration and blood pressure and how to put on sterile gloves to protect a patient from infection.
