Advising
If you are Freshman or Sophomore, you should go to the Fulbright Advising Center for advisement.
If you are a Junior or Senior, you should go to the fourth floor of Kimpel Hall outside office number 433; there you will find a list of advisors and advisees. You should check the list and find your name and see which advisor you have been assigned. It is your responsibility to contact your advisor.
You can select or change your advisor at any time. It is important for you to choose an advisor who shares your interests and can help you reach your academic goals, therefore, you should consider choosing an advisor in your area of interest. The department is divided into three broad areas: (a) rhetoric and public communication; (b) interpersonal, small group, and organizational communication; and (c) mass communication. If you wish to change your advisor notify Dr. Amason.
There are some advisors who specialize in certain areas such as travel abroad, internships, and graduate school. You may want to check with these advisors for these special items.
- Internships: Dr. Wicks
- Scholarships for Communication Majors:Dr. Schulte
Regularly visit your advisor for reasons other than just registration advice. Advisors may aid you in such areas as career choices, choosing graduate and professional schools, choosing instructors, improving study skills and tutoring, academic difficulties and progress, graduation, and other requirements. You may need a recommendation from your advisor for employment, student financial aid, or for any other personal or professional reason so it helps to establish a relationship with your advisor. Look to your advisor as an important professional ally in your college career.
Keep these things in mind when advising week arrives each semester:
- Make an appointment with your advisor or seek advice during his or her office hours.
- Arrive promptly and be familiar with the class schedule and catalog requirements.
- Before meeting with your advisor for registration advice, tentatively plot out your schedule for the academic semester.
- Have alternative courses noted in case your primary courses are filled.
- Ask your advisor plenty of questions--he or she is here to help you
