I urge those of you who have been badmouthing the public schools to reconsider
some of the things you have said. In your urgency to find some institution
to blame, you display incredible snobbery and contempt at the same time.

For the most part, the public schools are doing their jobs. The communities
that oppose them, to wit, liberal do-gooders, black activists, and Christian
pressure groups, make a difficult situation impossible. I know you folks
fear and hate credentials and experience, but I started working Title III
and MDTA in 1965 and have been at it continuously, even into retirement.

I am quite familiar with the situation of the urban school, and am prepared
 to debate on the proposition

Resolved that community intractability and opposition has defeated the
 purpose of the public schools.

In short, I think, and so do the teachers, that it is YOUR fault.

Now, please tell me what you think a public school should do for children.
Please confine it to school, okay, if you can.
