ENDY Colloquium Schedule:

30 August 2004:

  • Speaker: Dr. Marvin Kay
  • Topic: Toto, I have a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore
  • Abstract: Archaeological evidence of tornadoes is expected in the Great Plains but is rarely, if ever, found. Tornado devastation of southwest Missouri on May 4, 2003, allows us to model tornado landscape impacts that might be observed archaeologically in grasslands, upland forests, and forest flood plain settings. Tornadoes also may have remodeled landscapes in ways favorable to predictable, cyclical patterns of land use. Tornado-prone landscapes may have been perceived as balancing immediate risks with long-term benefits.
