Sloan receives fellowship

MFA alum Maya Sloan has received a fellowship from the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation as one of 10 participants (5 from the English-writing world and 5 from Bulgaria) to attend the 2009 Sozopol Fiction Seminars on the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria. The program is designed to allow participants to explore their work in an international community of writers working in English or Bulgarian, and to encourage exchanges between NES writers and their Bulgarian colleagues in cooperation with the US Embassy.

Geoff Brock, animated

"And Day Brought Back My Night," a poem by our own Geoffrey Brock, has been adapted for an animated short film just released by the Poetry Foundation.

Upcoming publications and readings from Molly Giles

Molly Giles, a member of our fiction faculty, has a slew of upcoming publications and appearances.

Publications:

* An upcoming essay about grandmotherhood in the anthology Eye of My Heart, published by Harper Collins. (Ellen Gilchrist, another of our fiction faculty, also has an essay in this anthology.)
* A new story in the Winter/Spring 2009 issue of Green Mountains Review.
* A new story in the Winter/spring 2009 issue of Subtropics.
* A new story forthcoming in Epoch.

Appearances:
* A reading on April 30 and May 2 in San Francisco from Eye of My Heart.
* A reading on March 25 at Southern Indiana University.
* A reading on April 2 at Simpson College in Des Moines.
* Fiction workshops at Squaw Valley Community of Writers in August.
* A residency at Yaddo next December.

McHugh accepted by Diagram

Ashley McHugh's poem "Fling" has been accepted for an upcoming issue of Diagram. Ashley is a second-year student in the program.

Hammond accepted to Black Warrior Review

Allison Hammond's story "Tuesday's Child" has been accepted for publication in Black Warrior Review and will appear in the upcoming Fall/Winter issue (#36.1). Allison is a third-year student in the MFA program.
