McHugh Wins New Criterion Poetry Prize

Ashley McHugh

Ashley Anna McHugh, a third-year student in the program, has won the 10th Annual New Criterion Poetry Prize for Into These Knots, her first book-length manuscript. The award brings a cash prize of $3,000, and publication by Ivan R. Dee in Chicago. At 24 years of age, McHugh is the youngest writer to win the prize. Previous winners of the prize include our very own Geoffrey Brock.

Kotnik in the Summerset Review

Keely Kotnik's story "Your Freedom and Your Rescue" has been published in the winter issue of the Summerset Review. Keely is a recent graduate of the program.

Peterson finalist for Third Coast Contest

Josh Peterson's story "A Cold Man" has been named as a finalist for the 2010 Third Coast Fiction Contest. The winner will be announced in February. Peterson is a first-year student in the program.

Stripling forthcoming in Relief Journal

Sara Stripling's poem "Fire Baptism" has been accepted by Relief Journal. It will appear in issue 3.2. Sara is a fourth-year student in the program.

McHugh forthcoming in Unsplendid

Ashey McHugh's poem "In Praise of the Light Bulb" has been accepted for a future issue of Unsplendid.

Sidney Wade reads Tuesday

Poet and translator Sidney Wade reads from her work Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Giffels Auditorium. Sidney has published five collections of poems, the most recent of which is Stroke, from Persea Books. Her poems and translations have appeared in a wide variety of journals, including Poetry, The New Yorker, Grand Street, Paris Review, The New Republic, The Gettysburg Review, Two Lines, and The Kenyon Review, among others. She translates the poems of Guven Turan, Yahya Kemal, and Gulseli Inal, among others, from the Turkish. She recently served as president of the Association for Writers and Writing Programs, and has taught at the University of Florida in the Creative Writing Program since 1993.
