Middle East Studies
The Arabic Program is closely affiliated with the King Fahd Middle East Studies Center. The Center offers generous scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships to a significant number of students studying Arabic. Many Arabic students are MEST double-majors. For a complete listing of MEST majors, course offerings, and scholarship opportunities, visit the website at: http://www.uark.edu/depts/mesp/ or contact Dr. Tom Paradise, Director, King Fahd Middle East Studies Center, 202 Old Main, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR 72701 email: paradise@uark.edu.
Eastern Dialect Project
In 2008 the Arabic Program began introducing a colloquial Eastern Dialect component into the various levels of Standard Arabic. With generous support from the Nadine Baum Teaching Grants and the King Fahd Middle East Studies Center, the Arabic Program faculty developed DVDs, audio-mp3s, teacher manuals, and student drills and exercises, pioneering a complete course in the Eastern Dialect.
Extracurricular Activities
The Arabic program offers a regular table meeting to give students an opportunity to practice their Arabic language skills outside the classroom with native speakers and beginners alike. The Arabic program also participates in the annual speech contest; students compete in a structured setting using their newly acquired skills. Check the department's events page for upcoming dates and other special events.
