Fountains in Nice, FranceFrench is the second most frequently taught foreign language in the world, following English, and it continues to be one of the official languages of dozens of international organizations. It is also the only other language–again, besides English–that is spoken on five continents. French is truly a global language, crucial for students of business, international relations, and politics, as well as those of literature and culture.

Cathedral of Notre Dame in ParisAt the undergraduate level, we offer a major and a minor. At the graduate level, we offer an M.A. We encourage study abroad for our majors and minors and are pleased to offer our own UA summer program in Besançon at the Centre de Linguistique Appliquée, as well as a program at the Ecole de Langue Française et de Culture Québécoise in Chicoutimi, Québec, Canada. Our undergraduate students also have the opportunity to participate in the UA direct exchange program with the Université du Maine in Le Mans, France. We strongly promote the study of Francophone literature, language and culture, emphasizing proficiency in listening, speaking, writing and reading.
