(B.A., University of Kansas, 1977; M.A., University of Kentucky, 1979; Ph.D., University of Kansas, 1984), joined the University of Arkansas in 1992 and is currently an Associate Professor of Spanish. Professor Bell works primarily in the area of modern Spanish American Literature and specializes in the Latin American Novel, Mexican literature, and Critical Theory. Professor Bell has presented many conference papers on these subjects, and he has published numerous articles and reviews in national and international journals, including an extensive entry on "Mexico" in the Handbook of Latin American Literature, 1992. He also co-authored and edited the volume entitled Critical Theory, Cultural Politics, and Latin American Narrative, 1993.

She is currently an Assistant Professor, and holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in comparative literature, and a B.A. in comparative literature and Spanish. Puente's dissertation is titled "Locating Slavery in the Modern National Imaginary: The Legacy of Haiti," and it examines the convergences of history and fiction, postcolonial theory and contemporary cultural production in the Caribbean. Currently she is working on a project that examines the production of popular culture in relation to tourism and the state in Brazil. Her teaching interests include Caribbean literature and culture, the Afro-Latin world, and U.S.-Latino literature and culture.

(B.A., Millsaps College, 1968; M.A., University of North Carolina, 1973; Ph.D., University of North Carolina, 1979) joined the University of Arkansas faculty in 1982 and is currently a Professor of Spanish. Dr. Pritchett commonly teaches three undergraduate courses (Introduction to Literature, Monuments of Spanish Literature II, and Spanish Civilization) and three graduates classes (Nineteenth-Century Spanish Drama and Poetry, Nineteenth-Century Spanish Narrative, and Spanish Literature Since 1898). Once she had completed her graduate work at the University of North Carolina, as a recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Travel Grant to Spain she began her research into recent poetry and later published Four Postmodern Poets of Spain: A Critical Study with Translations of the Poems (1991) and Pureza Canelo's Celda verde / Green Cell: A Critical Study with Translations of the Poems (2000). Her most recently published critical studies are Nature’s Colloquy with the Word: Pureza Canelo’s Early Poetics (Bucknell, 2004) and In Pursuit of Poem Shadows: Pureza Canelo's Second Poetics (Bucknell, 2011). This last book has recently been awarded the South Central Modern Language Association Book Award for criticism. Dr. Pritchett has published critical essays in journals as well as translations of two Bolivian novels: Jonah and the Pink Whale (1991) and In the Land of Silence (1994). Her primary research interests are contemporary poetry and fiction, psychoanalytic theory, feminism, and the occult.

(B.A. Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia, 1988; M.A. University of Maryland, 1992; Ph.D. University of Maryland, 1996), joined the Department in the Fall of1995 and has provided much additional expertise in Spanish American Literature and Culture to our expanding B.A. and M.A. programs. His specialization is in Colonial Latin American Literature, and he has a special interest in film and interdisciplinary studies. In the Spring of 2000, he was a visiting professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, with a Fulbright Scholar Award. He has served in the executive committe of the MLA's Division of Colonial Spanish American Literature and in the Fulbright Senior Scholar Peer Review committee of Andean Countries. In 2005 and 2006, he was a visiting professor at the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. He serves in the editorial boards of Confluencia (Colorado), Revista Estudios de Literatura Colombiana (Universidad de Antioquia) and Cuadernos de Literatura (Universidad Javeriana). His current research project is on the Muisca and the ethnopolitics of memory in Colombia. Since 2004, he has been directing the graduate program in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies.

Reina Ruiz joined the University of Arkansas in fall 2001 and is currently an Associate Professor of Spanish. Research interests include Golden Age literature with special emphasis on 17th century female playwrights. Other interests include Spanish and Spanish American contemporary drama, performance and the visual arts. She has directed plays by Cervantes, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Juan Ruiz de Alarcón and García Lorca amongst others. After publishing her book on 17th century female playwright, Feliciana Enríquez de Guzmán, professor Ruiz is working on a book manuscript containing a critical edition on Feliciana's complete works. She has presented papers at international, national and regional conferences and teaches graduate literature courses on the Spanish Golden Age, contemporary Spanish and Spanish American theater. Ruiz has also taught courses on language, phonetics, business, conversation, culture and the Spanish Civil War in literature and cinema. She is currently the Spanish MA coordinator and directs the Tertulia, a weekly Spanish table.

He has since taught classes on Latin American Culture and Literatures, special topics concerning Latin America today and graduate seminars on Latin American XIX century literature. He also participates in the MA in Cultural Studies, Universidad ARCIS, as a visiting professor and is an active researcher and translator. His field focuses in literary and cultural studies, and he is finishing two manuscripts-- one related to postdictatorship in the Southern Cone and the exhasution of politics, and another related to War and Society in Latin America in the XIX century. He also serves as an undergraduate adviser for our Spanish Program.
