A major or minor in Spanish provides in-depth study of the language, literature, and culture of the Hispanic world. Our students achieve high linguistic competence in Spanish
and a broad perspective of the cultures of Spain, Latin America, and U.S. Hispanics. Spanish majors and minors find multiple professional opportunities at home and abroad in education, government, social services, health services, international business, foreign service, law, journalism and many other fields. Spanish has been part of Arkansas' history since the 16th century expedition of Hernando de Soto. In the past decade, many Hispanic immigrants have settled in Arkansas, making Spanish the second language. With over forty million Hispanics living in the United States today, students— regardless of their chosen field— are finding it valuable, if not indispensable, to learn the language of this large sector of the population.
At the undergraduate level we offer a major, a minor, and a minor with a business concentration. At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Arts degree. We encourage study abroad and offer multiple opportunities as well as
financial backing for students who enroll in summer, semester, or year-long programs at a foreign institution. In order to allow our students to practice their skills and acquaint themselves with Hispanic cultures, we schedule ongoing and special events through the Spanish Cineclub, Tertulia, and Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Society. The Spanish Program also participates in several other programs across campus.
