Latin Percussion Instruments

Bongo Drums: two small attached drums, one of which is tuned higher than the other.  They are from the Afro-Cuban origin.

Claves: two sticks that are hit together to create a high and round percussive sound.

Conga: A large, long drum of Afro-Cuban origin that is played with the hands and fingers.

Güiro: A grooved gourd with holes at the bottom that is scraped with a stick.

Marimba: a large xylophone type instrument that has a mellower sound.  It can have a range of up to seven octaves.  The marimba comes from African and Latin American origins.

Timbales: Two drums of Cuban origin tuned to different pitches that are hit with drum sticks.
