Capital City

Havana (pop. 2,200,000)

Havana is largest city in the Caribbean with a population of over 2.2 million. It is political, economic, and cultural center of Cuba. There are revolutionary monuments throughout the city. Much of the Spanish colonial architecture is in the process of being preserved.

The outer lying Havana province is of little significance. It is host to cattle ranches and limited agriculture. The southern port town of Batabanó serves as the gateway to Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth).

Highlights

  • Preserved Spanish castles of El Morro and La Cabaña
  • Capitolio, modeled after the capital building in Washington D.C.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Gran Teatro de La Habana, the oldest functioning theater in the Americas.
