Santiago de Cuba is the birthplace to the revolution. Fidel Castro and his comrades raided the Moncada Barracks on July 26, 1953. It was during Castro's trial after the assault that he gave his famous "History Will Absolve Me" speech. The province is also home to Cuba's highest point, Pico Turquino, in the Sierra Maestra Mountains

Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city, behind Havana. The province is also the second most populous.
