Bad
Bug Book
This is a handbook from the FDA. It provides basic facts regarding foodborne
pathogenic microorganisms and natural toxins. Some technical terms have
been linked to the National Library of Medicine's Entrez glossary. Recent
articles from Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports have been added to
selected chapters to update the handbook with information on later outbreaks
or incidents of foodborne disease.
Food Safety and Inspection
Service
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the public health agency
in the U.S. Department of Agriculture responsible for ensuring that the
nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe,
wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. It provides on-line information
concerning the agency, its activities, and food safety issues. Includes
consumer education and information and HACCP implementation and technical
reports.

Safety Network
The Food Safety Network at the University of Guelph, Ontario, provides
research, commentary, policy evaluation and public information on food
safety issues from farm-to-fork. Using electronic networks, extensive
databases and rigourous field research, the Food Safety Network works
closely with the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety as well as
national and international collaborators to put science into action --
to develop and implement scientific and publicly credible policies and
programs to enhance the safety of the food supply.

The National Research Initiative Competitive
Grants Program (NRICGP) is the office in the Cooperative State Research,

Eastern
Regional Research Center
Contains a Pathogen Modeling Program for
Windows. This predictive microbiology application program was designed
as a research and instructional tool for estimating the effects of multiple
variables on the growth or survival of foodborne pathogens. The Center
is one of four regional research centers of the USDA's Agricultural

Research Project
Regional Research Project NE-165, does
research on the impacts of changes in strategies, technologies, consumer
behavior, and policies on the economic performance of the food system,
and on how private and public strategies influence improvement in food
safety and other quality attributes. It has over 90 members, primarily
from universities and government agencies, and a core research group
at the Food Marketing Policy Center, Universities of Connecticut and
Massachusetts.
Emerging Infectious Diseases
Emerging Infectious Diseases is part of
CDC's plan for combating emerging infectious diseases; the plan is outlined
in a recently published document, Addressing Emerging Infectious Disease
Threats — A Prevention Strategy for the United States. One of
the main goals of CDC's plan is to enhance communication of public health
information about emerging diseases so that prevention measures can
be implemented without delay. Emerging Infectious Diseases is peer reviewed.

The National Alliance for Food Safety and Security — A Partnership for the Science of Safe Food — is a joint
