HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM



PROGRAM FACULTY AND SUPPORT STAFF

Faculty and support staff resources available to students include four faculty members, whose full-time teaching commitment is Higher Education, five other faculty who regularly serve on dissertation committees, guest lecture in classes, and participate in other meaningful ways in the program, and one full-time staff member. A brief profile of the faculty and staff showing degrees (and institutions), courses taught, and areas of interest follows.

 



James O. Hammons
-
Professor of Higher Education (B.S. Northwestern State University of Louisiana, M.S. Southern Illinois University, Ph.D. University of Texas). Prof. Hammons began his higher education career in administration serving in a variety of student services positions at Southern Illinois University. He was then Assistant-to-the Campus Director, and Acting Campus Director at Miami-Dade Community College, and the founding Dean of the College of Burlington County College (New Jersey). Prior to coming to the University of Arkansas, he was a researcher-professor working at the National Laboratory for Higher Education, the Center for the Study of Higher Education (Penn State). He is a widely sought consultant-speaker, having assisted over 200 colleges and universities in 41 states and provinces and spoken at more than 200 national conferences. He has authored over 100 publications, including two books and 70+ refereed journal articles. Four of his 70+ dissertations have won national recognition. Christopher J. Lucas
- Professor of Higher Education and Educational Foundations (B.A. Syracuse University, M.A. Northwestern University, Ph.D. Ohio State University). Prof. Lucas began his higher education career as a teaching associate at Ohio State University. He subsequently assumed an academic position combining teaching and administration at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served as an Area Coordinator for the Education Studies unit as well as Interim Director of the UMC Center for International Programs and Studies. He later served as Department Head in the Graduate School of Education at Kent State University. He served as Department Head (Educational Leadership, Counseling and Foundations) at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville from 1993 through 2001. He has authored over 100 publications, including 14 books. He is frequently in demand as a speaker, panelist, and consultant. Sherry L. Mallory -- Adjunct Assistant Professor of Higher Education (B.A. University of California, Santa Cruz; Ph.D. University of Arizona). Dr. Mallory serves as the Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas. Her areas of responsibility include assessment, staff development, information technology, marketing, and providing oversight for the Division's budget. Prior to arriving at Arkansas, she was the Director of Research and Assessment for Student Life and an Adjunct Lecturer of Higher Education at the University of Arizona. Dr. Mallory is an active member of the National Association of Student
Personnel Administrators, serving as the Public Policy Coordinator for Region IV-West and as a member of the NASPA Journal editorial board. Her e-mail address is smallor@uark.edu





 
John W. Murry, Jr.
- Associate Professor of Higher Education (B.S.B.A., M.B.A., J.D., Ed.D. University of Arkansas, Fayetteville). Dr. Murry began his higher education career as Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He then taught at Mesa State College (Colorado), and later Henderson State University (Arkansas). Prof. Murry has been at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville since 1994, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Administration for the College of Education and Health Professions.  Prior to entering higher education, Dr. Murry was a former practicing attorney and partner in a law firm. His primary areas of interest include higher education law; leading change, organization development, and academic administration. He has authored or co-authored over 25 articles in these areas and has made over 40 national presentations. He regularly conducts legal training sessions with college and university faculty and academic administrators and K-12 school administrators on a wide range of legal topics. Lyle A. Gohn

Associate Professor of Higher Education (B.S., M.S., Ph.D. Purdue University). Prof. Gohn began his higher education career in student services administration, serving in a variety of assistantships while working on his advanced degrees at Purdue University. He served as Director of Student Activities at Southern Illinois, Carbondale, then moved to Wichita State University as the Assistant Dean of Students (later was promoted to Associate Dean and Dean). He then became the chief student affairs officer at Montana State University and taught in the Higher Education program. In 1982, he was selected as the Vice Chancellor for Student Services and Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas. In 1998, he moved to a full-time faculty position in the Higher Education program with an emphasis in college student personnel. He currently serves as the coordinator of the master’s program. Dr. Gohn has served as national president and chair of two major professional organizations (NASPA and NODA), held other state and regional leadership positions and in 1998 was named the "Outstanding Dean" in the Student Affairs profession by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. Dr. Michael Miller, Associate Professor of Higher Education Leadership, Ed.D., University of Nebraska. He began his career in higher education working as the Assistant Director then Director of Annual Giving at Southern Illinois University. After completing his doctoral degree under Professor Alan Seagren at Nebraska, he worked as the Director of the Nebraska Research and Development Unit for Vocational Education, and then as a faculty member and coordinator of the Higher Education Administration Program at the University of Alabama. Most recently he served as the Associate Dean of the College of Education at San Jose State University in California. He is the author of Improving Faculty Governance and Academic Leadership in Community Colleges and editor of Responsive Academic Decision-Making and co-editor of The Transfer Student in America, Policy and University Faculty Governance, and International Dimensions to Higher Education Administration. G. David Gearhart
- Professor of Higher Education (B.A. Westminster, J.D., Ed.D. University of Arkansas, Fayetteville). Dr. Gearhart currently serves as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement on the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville campus. In 1976, he became Assistant to the President at Westminster College. A year later he was appointed the Director of Development at Westminster and the Director of Development for the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library. In 1982, he was selected as Director of Development at the University of Arkansas. In 1985 he became Vice President for Development and University Relations at Penn State University. Three years later he was appointed Senior Vice President. While at Penn State, he launched a major capital campaign which raised over $352 million. Total private gifts to Penn State during his 11 years at the University surpassed $950 million. In 1998, he returned once again to his native state as Vice Chancellor of University Advancement at the University of Arkansas. He is responsible for the development, alumni, special events, and university relations programs. He is a distinguished alumnus of his alma mater, Westminster College, and in 1991 was named a Fulbright Scholar and studied at Oxford University, Merton College, in Oxford, England. Susan Stephenson -
Adjunct Assistant Professor of Higher Education (B.S., M.B.A., Ed. D. University of Arkansas). Dr. Stephenson currently serves as the Associate Dean for Administration in the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Arkansas. She is responsible for the administrative services (accounting, audit, budget, information systems, policy, purchasing, security, etc.) serving the Division's Credit Studies, Non-credit Studies, National/International Credit Studies, Distance Education, and Media Services departments. In addition to her current role, she has held positions in higher education as a residence hall advisor, a scholarship athlete in tennis, a graduate assistant in academic advising, an internal auditor, a financial analyst, and an accounting supervisor. Dr. Stephenson also holds professional certifications as a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Internal Auditor, a Certified Government Financial Manager, a Certified Fraud Examiner, and a Certified Information Systems Auditor. Prior to joining the University of Arkansas, she worked for over ten years in commercial management and public accounting. Johnetta Cross Brazzell - Adjunct Associate Professor of Higher Education (B.A., Spelman College; M.A., University of Chicago; Ph.D., University of Michigan). Dr. Brazzell currently serves as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas. She has held positions at Spelman College, University of Arizona and Oakland University. Recognizing that much learning takes place outside the classroom, Dr. Brazzell is leading her staff towards developing innovative programs that will reach out from all areas during the University of Arkansas student experience. Great strides are being made toward incorporating the mission of the Student Affairs across the academic and administrative units of the University.
