HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

DAVID W. MULLINS LIBRARY

T
he University Libraries of the University of Arkansas consist of David W. Mullins Library (the main library), the Robert A. and Vivian Young Law Library, the Fine Arts Library, the Chemistry Library, the Physics Library, and the Learning Resources Center.

Nearly all of the 1.5 million volumes of books and periodicals in Mullins Library are organized under the Library of Congress classification system and are arranged in the stacks by subject. These materials are placed on open shelves so that library users have free access to them. Other collections such as government documents, reference works, original manuscripts, microforms, audiovisual materials, and other special resources are located in specially designated areas.

One part of Mullins Library that we are particularly proud of is the book and periodical collection relating to Higher Education; another is the close working relationship between library staff and the faculty and students in the Higher Education Leadership Program.  The book collection received a major "boost" in 1977 with $10,000 special allotment to purchase the basic collection.    Since then, faculty have ordered 150-250 books per year to maintain the collection.  The result is a very good collection of books in the field of Higher Education.

As is true at most universities, periodicals at the University of Arkansas have been scrutinized and cut back twice in the past ten years.  Fortunately, while we have not been able to add new journals Higher Education periodicals have not been cut.  Consequently, we still receive all the major indexed journals.

The information age brought with it the computerization of the Library--and the need to train faculty and students in order to take full advantage of the efficiencies it offered.  The result is a constantly changing workshop for all new students conducted each term by library reference personnel.  The results of all the above speak for themselves--the ability to quickly find and access current materials on topics of interest to students and faculty.
