Julie Wilcox visits the west coast of Ireland during her session at the University of Limerick.

“My experience in Ireland gave me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and open up to the world,” says Julie Wilcox, a junior in the UA department of poultry science.

Attending the University of Limerick in Ireland opened up a whole new world of adventure for Julie Wilcox, a graduate from Alpena High School. She completed courses in the visual culture of Ireland and learned about Irish paintings, sculpture and architecture.

“I never would have learned about this subject or experienced Irish culture had I not participated in the study abroad program in Ireland,” said Wilson. “In addition to just learning about Irish art and visual culture in the classroom, we actually went to see this art in person through field trips.”

Wilson said that traveling on her own helped her to grow and realize that she could manage on her own. She said he made many new friends that she plans to visit next year.

“While in Ireland, I traveled to Dublin, Cork, Blarney, Galway and even across the Irish Sea to London,” Wilson said. “I made memories that will last a lifetime.”

Wilson’s study abroad program was through the American Institute for Foreign Study and coordinated through the Bumpers College Global Studies Program and the UA Study Abroad Office. Wilcox received one of the Cordia Harrington “The Bun Lady” International Experience Endowed Scholarships to help finance her travel expenses.
