DAAD is pleased to announce the third year of “internXchange,” an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for 20 American journalism and communications students with strong German language skills.

For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country’s current social conditions and media scene. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin. Participants receive a stipend and travel subsidy.

The application deadline is January 31, 2010. Up to 40 finalists will be invited to a selection interview in New York City (in early March).

The IRTS Summer Fellowship Program teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the media industry and business world through a nine-week , expense-paid fellowship , which includes practical experience and career-planning advice. Fellows gain full-time, “real world” experience at New York-based media companies. In addition, the Fellowship provides the opportunity to network with industry professionals, take related field trips, and attend panels, lectures and group discussions.

ELIGIBILITY:

AAAS Minority Science Writers Internship

The 2010 AAAS Minority Science Writers Internship application is now available online.

Please share this opportunity with your students.

Science is a global activity, but the demographics of the journalists who cover it don’t reflect that diversity. The Minority Science Writers Internship is for undergraduate students who are interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing.

The Internship takes place each summer at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of AAAS’s Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world. Interns spend 10 weeks at Science under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors, and have a chance to experience what science writers do for a living. Interns are expected to contribute to the weekly news section, including bylined articles in the print and electronic news service.

The paid internship includes travel costs to and from the internship site in Washington, D.C. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the Intern. The Internship runs from June to mid-August.

The 2010 summer program application deadline is March 1, 2010. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate academic program when they submit their application.

The Washington Post offers 12-week, paid reporting internships on the Local, Financial, Sports, Style and Editorial desks, as well as internships for Visual Journalists, Web Producers and Web Designers. It has a heavy Web and multimedia focus and is open to college juniors and seniors, as well as grad students. The program has served as a launching pad for quite a few students, many of whom work today in the Post newsroom and others. The Post requires that intern applicants have previously had at least one professional internship.

The Washington Post is also seeking interns with strong skills and interest in online journalism. Prospective interns must be students currently enrolled in a degree program, and, if selected, must submit one of the following on or before the first day of the internship: 1) documentation showing that academic credit is being received (i.e. a copy of the course registration), or 2) a letter from a professor, department head, or academic advisor stating that the internship significantly contributes to the student’s current degree program, or 3) a letter from the school stating that the internship is part of a work-study or independent study program.

The intern will be assigned a mentor to help teach them the skills that will help qualify them for a job in online journalism.

Hours per week: 16 hours maximum, unpaid, with flexible scheduling.

For 11 days, from Jan 2 through 12, at the University of Arizona in Tucson you have a chance to work one-on-one with journalists from one of the world’s most prestigious publications. You’ll participate with two dozen other students who share your passion for news, forming friendships that will last a lifetime. All costs, including transportation to and from Tucson, are paid by The New York Times, and there’s even a small stipend so you have some spending money in Tucson.

Student participants cover Tucson from a newsroom supervised by Times staffers, who work closely with individual students on their assignments. There are opportunities for student writers, photographers, web producers, page and graphics designers, copy editors and video and audio journalists. (You don’t have to settle on just one thing; the Institute allows you to experiment with a range of newsroom jobs if you want to.) The Eric Breindel Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce that applications for the “2010 Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award,” the nationwide undergraduate competition whose winning prize is unmatched by any institution in the country, are now being accepted.

The winner will secure the following awards:

  • A cash prize of $10,000
  • A paid internship of his or her choice at Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal or the New York Post
  • Residential housing in New York City, if necessary.

The Eric Breindel Memorial Foundation will present the award to the undergraduate columnist, editorialist or reporter whose work best reflects the spirit of the writings by Eric Breindel: Love of country and its democratic institutions as well as the act of bearing witness to the evils of totalitarianism.

The award, created in memory of the New York Post editor and columnist, includes opinion journalism, news coverage and online articles. It is open to undergraduate writers and reporters of all political convictions and backgrounds and submissions may include college newspapers, magazines or periodicals, as well as online articles published on accredited college institution web sites. The award recognizes the editorial pursuit of freedom and American ideals.

In the past the award has been presented by Rupert Murdoch, Chairman & CEO, News Corporation and Roger Ailes, Chairman of Fox News Channel and Fox Television Stations.

Last year’s winner, Carl J. Kelm, was a recent graduate of Stanford University with a major in political science and a minor in history and chose an internship at The Wall Street Journal.

The winner two years ago John Wilson, chose an internship at the New York Post and was subsequently hired as the Associate Editorial Page Editor. The first winner, Matt Mireles, attended Columbia University in New York and chose an internship at Fox News Channel. He is currently involved in creating technology for the new era in communications.

Those who wish to be considered should submit no more than two editorials, columns or news stories, per person, written in the 2009-2010 academic year. Articles specifically produced for and published by an established newspaper or magazine web site will be accepted as well as internet exclusive material. All rules governing submissions appear on the attached page. A confidential panel of judges appointed by the Foundation will judge the entries. The winner will be announced in June 2010.

ABOUT ERIC BREINDEL

In 1977, Eric Breindel graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, where he was editorial chairman of the Harvard Crimson and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving his A.B. from Harvard, Eric studied politics at the London School of Economics. He went to Harvard Law School where he received his J.D. in 1982.

Eric Breindel became the Editorial Page Editor of the New York Post in 1986. Breindel was appointed Senior Vice President of News Corporation in 1997. His nationally syndicated column appeared weekly in the New York Post and he was the moderator of a weekly national public affairs television program, Fox News Watch, on the Fox News Channel. A book of his columns, titled A Passion for Truth: The Selected Writings of Eric Breindel, was published in 1998.
