Irene McMullin's area of specialization is 20th Century Continental philosophy, especially phenomenology and existentialism and how these approaches can be applied to social/political topics.  Her most recent  
work examined Heidegger's account of intersubjectivity and its role in the constitution of the self.  In 2006-2007 she was a research fellow at Bergische Universität in Wuppertal, Germany.  She is currently  
focusing her research on Husserl's notion of expression and Arendt's characterization of the relationship between memory and the political arena.
