1905: Einstein's Miraculous Year

After reviewing the state of theoretical physics that confronted Einstein at the turn of the 19th-20th century, the discussion will turn to his contributions to physics in 1905 under three headings:

  1. Further development of the mechanical world view through the kinetic theory of heat;
  2. Resolution of the conflict between classical mechanics and Maxwell's electrodynamics by development of the special theory of relativity;
  3. Demonstration that neither classical mechanics nor Maxwell's electrodynamics could survive confrontation with the newly-emerging quantum phenomena.
