Graduate Physics Program
Financial Support

Almost all of our graduate students are supported by teaching or research assistantships. The stipend at present is about $1,150 per month for the nine-month academic year. In addition, the tuition is paid by the University for all graduate assistants. Thus the total financial value of the graduate assistantship is approximately $17,000 per academic year. This, coupled with the low cost of living in the Fayetteville area, removes much of the financial strain often associated with the pursuit of a graduate degree. Assistantships during summer are also available.

Graduate students generally spend the first two years as teaching assistants and thereafter become research assistants.

Especially qualified students may compete for financial packages (combination of graduate assistantships and fellowships) of $30,000 per year for four years. The financial value of this package could be up to $40,000 per year.

In addition, entering graduate students interested in spreading science into our K-12 education system may apply for an NSF GK-12 Fellowship (go to http://gk12.uark.edu for more details.)

Fellowships to support populations under-represented in the physics community are also available.
