DR. ANNE FANATICO
USDA-ARS
Research Associate

Dr. Fanatico's interests are specialty poultry production, including alternative production systems such as cage-free and free-range, alternative genetics such as slow growing meat birds with high welfare or meat quality attributes, and alternative nutrition such as free-choice feeding. Her interests also lie in specialty markets for local food production, certification programs such as National Organic Program and animal welfare assurance programs and the role of small- and mid-size farms in sustainable agriculture and rural development.

A native of South Carolina, Dr. Fanatico earned a bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill before serving two years as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica at the tropical research center CATIE. She later earned a Master of Science degree in Animal Science from Oregon State University, where she supervised the OSU Rabbit Research Center.

Dr. Fanatico came to Northwest Arkansas in 1993 to work for the nonprofit, National Center for Appropriate Technology, where she developed information and training on alternative poultry production (free-range, organic, etc.) for 13 years. She also conducted independent inspections of poultry well-being in alternative production. She completed her Ph.D. in Poultry Science from the University of Arkansas in 2007, where her dissertation topic focused on specialty poultry production. She joined USDA ARS PPPSR to conduct research on organic poultry production and alternative systems for small and mid-size farms.
