Following service in World War II, Dr. Forsythe received his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Iowa State University. He worked in the egg and poultry industry before returning to Iowa State as Head of the Department of Poultry Science in 1960. He returned to the private sector, supervising food research and development, and retired from Campbell Soup Company in 1988. After his retirement, he joined the University of Arkansas. He was appointed a Distinguished Professor and was the first to occupy the Arkansas Poultry Federation Endowed Chair in 1989. His work resulted in the development and execution of plans for the formation of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science, including an $18,000,000 poultry science facility. He continued to coordinate the Animal Food Products Safety Consortium. Forsythe has been active in industry affairs through the Institute of Food Technologists and other professional and scientific organizations. He was named "Man of the Year" by the American Poultry Federation in 1987 and was elected to the American Poultry Historical Society Hall of Fame in 1989. He was named a "Fellow" in the Institute of Food Technologists in 1982.
