The Department of Psychology actively participates in the Fulbright College Honors Program.  The honors program is designed to provide exceptional students with broad training in independent thinking, scholarship and research.  As an honors student, you take specialized honors colloquia that emphasize independent thinking, writing, and classroom participation.  As an honors student in psychology, you also engage in independent psychological research under the direction of one of the Psychology Department’s faculty members.  Fulbright College has two different honors programs.

Four Year Honors: To be granted honors through the four year program you must (a) complete 50 hours of honors courses, (b) maintain a GPA of at least 3.50, (c) complete and defend an honors thesis.

Departmental Honors: To be granted honors through the departmental honors program you must (a) complete 12 hours of honors courses, (b) maintain a GPA of at least 3.50, (c) complete and defend an honors thesis.

The culmination of a student’s participation in the honors program is the honors thesis.  The honors thesis provides a report of a research project you conduct under the supervision of one of the psychology department’s faculty members.  For most students this means conducting an empirical research project and writing a detailed report (the honors thesis) describing the research.  Once the project is carried out and the thesis is written, a committee of faculty members reads the thesis and you provide a thesis defense. The thesis defense usually starts with a brief oral presentation of your thesis. Your thesis committee then asks you questions about the thesis. Most students begin working on their honors project during the Spring of their junior year.  Details about the steps involved in completing an honors thesis, as well as the current Honors College calendar can be found at the Fulbright College Honors webpage.

Honors students receive recognition for their accomplishments at the graduation ceremony as well as during the Spring Honors Convocation.
