The protoplasts mature inside of the aphid to form hyphal bodies with distinct cell walls. These can be seen under a microscope when the aphid has been squashed.

The hyphal bodies can either develop into reproductive conidiophores (asexual cycle) or conjugate to form resting spores (sexual cycle).
