Adaptation

Adaptation is a combination of all of the attributes of a variety grown in a particular environment. The long-term average yield at a site is a good indication of its adaptation in that area. When studying yield data to determine if a variety is adapted, a grower should take into account the similarity in weather, soil type and other environmental conditions between his farm and the test site.

In general, varieties adapted to Arkansas will have adequate winter hardiness. A variety's ability to withstand the winter can be influenced by management. Excessive fall growth caused by factors such as high nitrogen fertility can make plants more susceptible to winter damage.
