2/21/08 - Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center will host a Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, February 21st in Combs Auditorium, Room 282. The speaker for the evening will be Mr. Ted C. Kennedy, founder of BE&K, Inc., a worldwide engineering, construction, and contract maintenance firm. Mr. Kennedy is one of the most successful engineers/contractors in the U.S. today. His company operates internationally. He is a past President of the National Academy of Construction and is currently the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Section at the National Academy of Engineering. It is a great honor for us that he is coming to speak to us. Mr. Kennedy's topic for the evening will be Leadership. Students and other interested parties are invited to attend. Pizza and soda will be served at 5:30pm.

Students and other interested parties are invited to attend and learn about “Civil Engineering in the Real World.” Free pizza and soda will be served beginning at 5:15 pm, followed by the speakers and a question and answer session. Click, Ph.D., P.E., and Aswini Rajagopalan 8/3/07 - The Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center has been named as one of six transportation research centers that will split $18 million annually for four years to study ways to protect the security of America’s transportation system. The University of Arkansas research center, which has been named a National Transportation Security Center of Excellence, was included in the Improving America’s Security Act of 2007, which President Bush signed on August 3.

4/19/07 - Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Center will host a Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, April 19th in Combs Auditorium, Room 282. The speaker for the evening will be Mr. James A. Rispoli, P.E., Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environmental Management. He is responsible for the cleanup of legacy waste and environmental contamination from the nation’s Cold War nuclear weapon production and nuclear-related research activities. The Department’s cleanup program has a current annual budget of more than $6.5 billion with operations occurring in over a dozen states. Mr. Rispoli's topic for the evening will be Environmental Management. Students and other interested parties are invited to attend. Pizza and soda will be served at 5:30pm.

The speaker for the evening will be Mr. Jimmy Slaughter, Past President of the National Academy of Construction. Mr. Slaughter runs a very large construction company and has had only one lost time accident in the last five years. He is fanatical about safety and pays about 20% of the insurance other contractors have to pay. He is going to share how he does it with us. Students and other interested parties are invited to attend. Pizza and soda will be served at 5:30pm.

10/19/06 - On Thursday, 19 October at 5:30pm in the College of Engineering Combs Auditorium, Room 282, there will be a MBTC Distinguished Lecture featuring Retired Lieutenant General Vald Heiberg, U.S. Army who was Chief of the Corps of Engineers from 1984 until 1988. General Heiberg will discuss the New Orleans levee situation. General Heiberg was the District Engineer for New Orleans back in the 1970's timeframe. This should be a most interesting presentation. General Heiberg has been a consultant since he retired, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Construction and many other organizations. He is a highly respected civil engineer throughout the United States.

1/11/06 - The Arkansas State Highway & Transportation Department has been generous enough to loan the Mack-Blackwell Rural Transportation Study Center many archive items from the 1930s-1950s for display in the Civil Engineering Student Study Center (Bell Engineering, Room 4009). Some of the items included in the display are textbooks, metal road signs, maps and charts, slide rules, original benchmarks from state surveys, photos of engineering projects, and license plates.
