Logo & Stationery Guidelines Nomenclature

The official name of this institution is "University of Arkansas."For an identification of the location of the University, it may be referred to as the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. The Fayetteville identifier should be used sparingly, however, such as when the geographical location is needed to clarify meaning.

Variations such as "UAF" when referring to the Fayetteville campus of the University of Arkansas are not appropriate. Appropriate abbreviations are "UA" used as an adjective and "U of A"" as a noun (note the spacing). "U of A," however, should be used judiciously and mainly in internal communications; otherwise the U of A may be confused with other universities with the same initials, such as Alabama, Arizona or Alaska.

Since the name "UNIVERSITY of ARKANSAS" is a part of the logo design, it is not always necessary to use the University's name again as a title in connection with the logo. The decision to reproduce both the logo and the UniversityÌs name on a single visual field should be based on the nature of the publication.

The Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas is the sole and exclusive owner of all the rights in and to the University of Arkansas name and seal, Razorback and Razorback graphics, design logos, symbols and other indicia used to represent the University of Arkansas.

According to Universitywide Administrative Memorandum 215.1, "The name of the University of Arkansas is used in a great many contexts and for a wide range of purposes. It is important to the institution that the use of the name 'University of Arkansas'... be limited to activities which are, in fact, activities of the University."

The use of the name "University of Arkansas" and symbols for commercial purposes is restricted. The Trademark Licensing Office, as part of a licensing agreement with Collegiate Licensing Company, coordinates requests for commercial use of the University's name and symbols. Trademark Licensing can be reached at 575-7404.
