The Academy Award nominations were announced Valentine’s Eve,
bright and early morning. Yet again I find, the Academy went
with safe, predictable choices in most major categories. But
a few surprises did make it in.
This year in the "Best Picture" category, I think there are
some really weak picks. Inn a year when such films like "Almost
Famous," "Quills," and "Wonder Boys" received most of the
critical acclaim, movies like "Gladiator" and Erin Brockovitch"
are nominated. I think that this is largely because of the
people in them, not because of artisitc achievement. At least
the Academy had the integrity to nominate "Traffic" and "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
The category of "Best Actress" also proves to be disappointing
because it seems to everyone that Julia Roberts is a sure
win. While I think Roberts is a good actress, the role she
played seemed but a vehicle for her to show that she could
do something other than romantic comedy.
If the voters want to see some real talent in an uneasy role,
they should look to other contenders.
I was more pleased with the categories other than "Best Picture"
and "Best Actress" because they showcase a lot of talent and
a variety of roles.
"Polluck," which was produced, directed and acted by Ed Harris
is a good example of the Academy actually nominating someone
on the merit of his or her performance despite the low level
of revenue the movie generated.
Overall, this year’s Academy Awards will again bow sown to
Hollywood’s royalty – Julia Roberts – when there are others
I feel more worthy. Fortunately, there are other categories
that still hold true to the ideals of the Academy Awards,
which is to award people for their efforts at producing the
best work for that year.
