Off-Campus Life Guide

III. Renters Insurance

Your belongings as a tenant are not protected from theft, fire or water damage under the owner's insurance. You may, however, be covered under your parents' home owners policy even though you are living "off the premises". Check to determine if any limits are imposed by the policy. Many policies will protect you for only your first year away form home. If further research leads you to believe that you are in need of an insurance policy, you can purchase a basic Tenant Insurance Policy from most major insurance companies. This policy will protect you from the loss of the contents of your dwelling resulting from fire, theft, or water damage. This includes items such as furniture, appliances, stereo equipment, television sets, clothing and other personal items. The cost of insurance is a wise investment in the event of burglary, fire, or water damage. Personal Property Insurance can also cover items stolen out of vehicles. This is not covered in Auto Insurance plans

IV. Roommates

The people with whom you live, will have a significant effect on your university experience. Your roomate relationships will influence your studying, your social activities and your overall well-being. So make the best of your situation by taking steps to assure a good roomate experience. Learning to choose a roomate that you can get along with is a valuable asset to the education you will recieve at the University of Arkansas.

CHOOSING A ROOMATE- To help you find a compatible roomate, OCSA has a Roomate Referral Service.

HOW TO USE THE ROOMATE REFERRAL SERVICE-

1. Acquire a Roomate Referral Card from the OCSA office, ARKU517.

2. Fill out the card listing: name, address, major, housing need, etc. and return the card to the OCSA office. It is a good idea to start your search two to four months before the roomate is needed.

3. Begin roomate search early by reviewing cards in the OCSA office. You are responsible for making your own contacts with prospective roomates.

4. It is important to find a suitable roommate before you sign the lease. Also, be sure to pick up a roommate contract at the OCSA office in ARKU 517.

ROOMATES ON THE WEB
OCSA has been working on our new World Wide Web site. When we have completed it, we hope to have a bulliten board where we will post roomate refferal information.

OTHER WAYS TO LOOK FOR ROOMMATES

1.
Place an ad in local newspapers such as the Northwest Arkansas Times, the Morning News and the University newspaper.

2. Tell your friends, neighbors, and classmates that you are looking for a roommate.

3. Keep your eyes open for announcements and articles advertising for roommates.
