HISTORY

In 1975, a task force was created by former University of Arkansas President, Bishop.  This task force, comprised of University officials, disabled students, and departmental managers, confronted problems and difficulties encountered by disabled students.  Thus, the University Association for Disability Awareness (UADA), formerly, Disabled Students Association was born.  Through the efforts of UADA and the task force, 1977 saw the formation of Campus Access, whose main goal was to provide services for disabled students in the campus community.  In 1979, UADA moved into a separate office.  UADA concentrated on issues facing disabled students and represented their voices in the campus community.  Since its inception, UADA has strived to support, educate, and be an advocate for students.  UADA is here to ensure disabled students' civil rights are protected in the students' pursuit of higher education and to effect change should violations occur.  In addition, UADA has a strong commitment to educating and sensitizing the campus community to the needs of persons with disabilities.  UADA concerns itself with the entire range of disabilities and seeks to locate and eliminate physical, educational, recreational, and attitudinal barriers.  In addition to serving its permanent population, UADA extends all services to the temporarily disabled.

SUMMARY OF GOALS

BARRIER AWARENESS DAY

UADA prides itself on its educational focus.  UADA holds an annual Barrier Awareness Day for the entire campus.  Students, faculty, staff, and friends are on hand to learn and engage in fun and educational activities.  Obstacle courses are featured where abled individuals are encouraged to use wheelchairs and  blindfolds across campus to experience the barriers and obstacles disabled individuals encounter on a daily basis.  Wheelchair basketball is always a favorite activity, allowing abled and disabled to compete.  Barrier Awareness Day is an enjoyable and educational way of bringing disabled and abled worlds together.
