Wendy BreeseWendy Breese, a graduate of Springdale High School, is earning a major in history and a minor in African American Studies.
Wendy writes, "I decided to join the African American Studies Program because of my acute interest in American history. Like many others, I feel that the history that we are force fed throughout life is just one part of the story. I believe to truly call yourself a student of history, you have to understand and learn about every aspect of history—not just the pretty and heroic Anglo-Saxon mumbo jumbo. Because I want to become a high school history teacher, I honestly believe that having African American Studies as my minor will better not only me, but my students as well."

Erica HarrisErica Harris, a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas,  is a 2002 Honors Graduate of Pine Bluff High School. Erica is currently a communications major in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences with a minor in African American Studies.
Erica writes, "I feel it is imperative to learn more about my heritage so that I can be better informed about who I am. I believe that if we are not knowledgeable about our history, we will inevitably repeat it. All should take an active role in learning the history of African Americans. In order to break down barriers between races as well as erase negative and prejudice stigmas that are attached to people of color, we should all take an active role in understanding and learning about the brilliance, beauty, and enduring strength of Blacks in America."
Erica serves as the President of the University of Arkansas’s NAACP College Chapter. She is a Fellow in the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MUFP) and a mentor in the Multicultural Center Connections Program. Erica is also a member of the Lambda Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

BridgesMatthew Bridges writes, "African American Studies offers me the opportunity to look at society through the lenses of another group of Americans. By doing so, I develop
not only a better understanding of society but of myself as well. So much
of what we deal with as a nation involves race in some way or another. I
feel that the knowledge that I gain from African American Studies will make
me more competent and sensitive about diversity."
