- Buffington, Jim, Marilyn & Bryce; 5504 Hidden Trails
Dr.; Arlington, TX 76017We are doing really
well. I am attaching a picture of my wife and I
(labeled Rhonda's wedding - we are the couple in the middle, I am wearing
the white shirt) and I attached a picture of my son and I. So, you can see I have aged a little since college, 20 years
ago. My son is in 10th grade this year and I am guiding him to attending U
of A. He needs to be a BSUer. Bryce is very active in our church youth group
and sings and plays the guitar. We are having a lot of fun with him during
these high school years. I am sure you can relate and have plenty of your
own stories. Early in the year, Marilyn’s mom, Mildred, lost her short fight
with cancer and passed away after a full life at eighty-three years old. She
is greatly missed.Bryce is 15 and received his drivers permit this summer.
Needless to say he is now our personal chauffer. He will be 16 in April and
cannot wait to drive without his parents in the car giving him excellent
driving instruction. Bryce enjoys high school and continues to sing, play
guitar and is active in our church youth group. His latest hobby seems to be
getting a new girlfriend every couple of weeks. Marilyn is still teaching in
elementary school and actually seems to love her job with all those kids. My
latest adventure is my volunteer work in a faith-based prison ministry. I am
part of a group that meets with inmates each week on Thursday nights and it
has been life changing for me. Most of the volunteers have been victims of
crime and we meet with these men in prison for an intense 12-week program to
help inmates gain victim empathy with the hopes they will not re-offend. It
has been incredible to track the statistics of our group. The national
average of inmates who commit crimes again is about 60%. Of the men who
attend our ministry, only about 10% ever go back to prison. It has been
extremely rewarding to be a part of this program.
We moved into a new home in August and celebrated our 20-year wedding
anniversary in October. Most of us realize that life is short. But, I read a
recent story in the news about a young 33-year-old pastor who was
electrocuted during a baptism at a church in Waco, Texas. I did not know
this man, but wanted to pass on an excerpt from part of what was to be his
last sermon: Kyle Lake's Last Sermon An excerpt from Kyle Lake's last sermon read at his funeral. I hope I can
live my life more like this: "Live. And Live Well. BREATHE. Breathe in and Breathe deeply. Be PRESENT. Do
not be past. Do not be future. Be now. On a crystal clear, breezy 70-degree
day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. Feel the
warmth of the sun. If you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool Autumn day to
FREEZE your lungs and do not just be alarmed, be ALIVE. Get knee-deep in a
novel and LOSE track of time. If you bike, pedal HARD… and if you crash then crash well. Feel the SATISFACTION of a job well done—a paper well-written, a project
thoroughly completed, a play well-performed. If you must wipe the snot from
your 3-year old’s nose, don’t be disgusted if the Kleenex didn’t catch it
all… because soon he’ll be wiping his own. If you’ve recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. And Grieve well. At the
table with friends and family, LAUGH. If you’re eating and laughing at the
same time, then might as well laugh until you puke. And if you eat, then
SMELL. The aromas are not impediments to your day. Steak on the grill,
coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. And TASTE. Taste every
ounce of flavor. Taste every ounce of friendship. Taste every ounce of Life.
Because-it-is-most-definitely-a-Gift."
