Asteroids and Comets Researchers at the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Science investigate processes on small astronomical bodies like asteroids and comets by a number a projects. Some fly experiments on NASA’s microgravity facility, an aircraft that climbs steeply and then descends rapidly so as to produce short periods of weightlessness, in order to reproduce processes that might occur on them. Others perform observations of asteroids using the NASA IRTF in order to characterize the surface mineralogy and chemistry of the asteroids. Yet others are designing missions to visit a nearby asteroid and bring samples back to Earth for analysis in our laboratories.
