Miss University of Arkansas was held from
1953 until 1993. The pageant originated in 1952 from the Queen of
Gaebale celebration and was called the “Sweetheart of the University of
Arkansas.” Jackie Stucker, a sophomore from West Helena, was the
first Miss University of Arkansas. She represented her sorority,
Delta Delta Delta.
Miss University of Arkansas was always
a favorite at parades and at Miss Arkansas. She would always ride
in a red convertible and was as easy to recognize as the beloved Hog.
Over the 40 year span, more than 20 of
our winners have brought home awards from Hot Springs and the Miss Arkansas
stage! Five ladies have won the title of Miss Arkansas while wearing
the crown of Miss University of Arkansas winners.

The pageant has been sponsored by many
different organizations over the years. The Associated Student Government
at one time ran Miss University of Arkansas in its early years. Campus
Activities, now called Student Involvement and Leadership, at one time
ran the pageant. In the later years Sigma Nu and Sigma Chi had a
hand in keeping the pageant alive while working with outside directors.
In 1993, the pageant’s director moved out
of state and the school was left without guidance and support for one of
the state’s most prestigious preliminaries.
After 8 of the top 10 at Miss Arkansas
and 8 of 9 preliminary award winners at Miss Arkansas were University of
Arkansas students, we felt it was time to try to bring this pageant back!
This year a group of hard working volunteers have done it! After
13 years of no Miss University of Arkansas, this preliminary promises to
be one of the top in the state!
