Pileated woodpecker

Drs. Paul W. Sykes Jr. (USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, University of Georgia) and Doug James (University of Arkansas) measure a bill of one of the museum's pileated woodpeckers for comparison with casts of the larger
ivory-billed woodpecker's bill. Ivory-bills, long thought extinct, have been
located this spring in Arkansas.

The seven million objects in the University's Collections tell the stories of the past, stories that connect us to the future. Qualified scholars, students, and members of the general public are invited to investigate our heritage in archeology, ethnology, history, geology, and zoology. Through loans for research or exhibits, the collections are available for study, teaching, and exhibition. For an appointment to view the collections, contact facility staff.
