Don't let these barriers keep you from participating fully in this class:

    "Students with no artistic talent or low confidence in their software skills can be put off by elaborate multimedia packages. They may be too quick to say, "I could never do that!" What they need to understand is that the most complex packages are produced by teams of writers, editors, designers, photographers and others -- and some of the team members may not officially be part of the "online staff" of the news organization. Chances are good that today's journalism students will collaborate on an online project sometime in their careers, even if they take a traditional print or broadcast job."

Wednesday, Sept. 2 --  Blogging and Spreadsheets

Lecture on blogs and spreadsheets

ASSIGNMENTS DUE:  The first two must be posted on my blog at kshurlds.wordpress.com

We talked about kinds of files last week. Find another kind of file, explain what it is and put the information on my blog as a comment. You cannot duplicate what others have written about, so doing this sooner rather than later will make it easier on you.

Find a job listing or job description for a journalism job that uses multimedia and post it to my blog. No duplications. Be sure to tell where you found it and provide the Internet link if that's where you found it. (If not, turn in hard copy.)

Be sure you have taken the class survey by now.


Wednesday, Sept. 9 -- Podcasting

Lecture on podcasting and RSS feeds
Final Project introduced


ASSIGNMENTS DUE:  With the partner assigned to you last week, find and present to the class online applications that allow you to record what is happening on your desktop.

Send an e-mail to me no later than Tuesday, Sept. 8, at noon, telling me what topic you would like to blog on, with a good paragraph about what kind of reporting you could do, how you'll do it, what visuals might be available, etc.


Wednesday, Sept. 16 -- Storyboarding

Wednesday, Sept. 23 -- Photography

Bring your camera, flash card and any cable you need to download your photos. If you don't have a camera, you can use one of the journalism department's.

ASSIGNMENTS DUE:  With the partner assigned to you last week, find and present to the class photo/video storage and/or editing sites.

Find an RSS feed that applies to your blog topic and add it to your site.


Wednesday, Sept. 30 -- Guest Speaker

ASSIGNMENT DUE:  Storyboard for Final Project; turn in hard copy.


Wednesday, Oct. 7 -- PhotoShop

Bring your camera, flash card and any cable you need to download your photos. If you don't have a camera, you can use one of the journalism department's.

In-class assignment to take photos, download them, and process them in PhotoShop.

ASSIGNMENT DUE:  With the partner assigned to you last week, find and present to the class "photo added" sites.


Wednesday, Oct. 14 --  Interviewing and Audio

IN CLASS: You will use your interviews from Oct. 14 to edit an audio story  70-90 seconds long, with at least two tracks.


Wednesday, Nov. 4-- SoundSlides

Lecture on SoundSlides

IN CLASS: You will use your audio file from last week to make a SoundSlide presentation using your photos from Oct. 7.


Wednesday, Nov. 11 --  Adding to Your Site

ASSIGNMENTS DUE:  With the partner assigned to you last week, find and present to the class online applications that you can use to create visuals/graphics, etc., for your blog.

Final Project Storyboard: Turn in log of all audio, turn in storyboard of edited aujdio with photos.



Wednesday, Nov. 18 -- Video conferencing to learn about multimedia jobs

ASSIGNMENTS DUE:  With the partner assigned to you last week, find and present to the class online applications that you can use to make video conference calls for free. For your demonstration, you must find someone who has a journalism job using multimedia and interview him using the application. The interview must be at least 10 minutes long and not longer than 15.

Add a graphic (from an application shown last week) to your blog.



Wednesday, Nov. 25 -- Thanksgiving break      NO CLASS!

ASSIGNMENT DUE:  With the partner assigned to you on Sept. 9, you should have recorded a campus lecture by now and edited it for podcasting. Add the podcast to MY blog. 

Wednesday, Dec. 2 -- Guest Speaker

ASSIGNMENT DUE:  Final Projects are due. We will watch them in class.
