American Woodcock,Scolopax mlnor.
Transient and summer resident in low numbers. Most sightings have occurred between mid-February and early December,
with a concentration between mid-February and early April when the males perform their nuptial flights. One bird was
found on the 1975
Christmas Bird Count at Fayetteville. Among recent nesting records are an adult with four hatchlings near Ponca in
Newton County on April 15, 1984, and an adult with four hatchlings in the Wharton Creek area of Madison County on March 31,
1985. Nuptial
flights are performed where open fields with some barren places adjoin forests. In such places several males can be seen
and heard performing at dawn and dusk during
early spring, even when there is snow on the ground. In recent years the open fields and parking lot area adjacent to the
Lake Fayetteville Environmental Study Center has been a regular site for these flights.
Wilson's Phalarope,Phalaropus tricolor.
August 14 to September 15+ and March 26 to June 3. Fairly common transient in small numbers. Most reports involve one or
a few of these birds, but 30 were counted at the state fish hatchery on May 2, 1984, and 32 were there on May 20, 1985.
A single bird there on July 4, 1987, was very early.
Red-necked Phalarope,Phalaropus lobatus.
A single bird in summer plumage was observed at the state fish hatchery on May 27, 1984. This sighting was described
on a documentation form now on file with the Arkansas Audubon Society. Three were present at the same place on
September 27, 1986.
Red Phalarope,Phalaropus fulicaria.
One was at Centerton on May 14, 1988, the only spring record for Arkansas.
